Claiming your business name and domain names is one of the most important steps in starting your business. This will set you apart and give you a recognizable way for people to get to know your business. Follow the steps below to register and purchase your domain name for your website. Selecting a Business Name
You can choose a creative business name that will reflect your product or service or you can simply operate under your own name.
If you want to choose a unique business name, it is important to keep the following things in mind:
✓ Your business name should appeal to your target market
✓ Be sure that it reflects the product or service that you are offering or else you might confuse your customers
✓ Think about how you want your business to be perceived (will it fit on signage, be linked to a logo, suit the image of your business, etc)
✓ Pick something that is easy to pronounce, easy to spell, and is memorable
✓ Make it unique/distinctive to avoid confusion and legal issues
You will need to register your business name in your province/state/country where you are practicing. You are exempt from doing this ONLY if you choose to run as a sole proprietor and use your legal name with no additions. All other forms of business ownership must be registered.
There are a few other exemptions:
If your business is a sole-proprietorship and you wish to operate under your own name, the name must be your exact legal name - you cannot add anything to the name, such as "Inc." or "Co." or "& Partners", nor can you add anything that would give potential customers/clients a clue about what you do.
If, for example, you decide to call your business something such as "ROSY ANNE'S Consulting Services", you have to register the business name, even if you are running it as a sole proprietorship.
Many consultants, authors, artists, etc use their own names because it makes sense as they are offering a unique service. But you may not want to if you have a very common name or long name and are hoping to have clients find you easily online, think you might expand into a corporation, are manufacturing a product, or could potentially take on employees or partners.
Under most circumstances, if the name that you have chosen is already in use, you cannot use it. It is required by law to have a unique business name that is not the same or similar to other existing corporations or trademarks. This can also cause issues with marketing.
To check whether or not your name is already in use you can search the internet, social media platforms, and then the national name databases. Be sure that if you are planning to operate in another country, you check the potential there as well.
This includes:
✓ Searching Google
✓ Websites/Domain names
✓ Social Media handles (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc)

Claiming Your Domain Name
Claiming your domain name early in the business formation process is crucial because it secures your brand's online identity and ensures consistency across your digital and physical presence. This early action prevents others from registering the domain first, potentially forcing you to settle for a less desirable web address or negotiate to acquire the domain at a higher price.
